General Competency Five. The teacher candidate uses an understanding of individual and group motivation and classroom management techniques to create a learning environment that encourages positive social interaction, active engagement in learning, and self-motivation.
Principle 5. Language teachers create an interactive, engaging, and supportive learning environment that encourages student self-motivation and promotes their language learning and cultural understanding.
It is my belief that a comfortable learning environment, in which each student feels valued is the first step towards meeting the goals of education. This includes subtle things like the arrangement of desks, management of administrative tasks and important things like clear expectations of behaviors, and the most important thing, treating each other with respect.
I enjoyed reading the “Classroom Behavior Management Plan” by James Vincent. His top ten beliefs and practices resonated with me, especially the first that states “Effective curriculum will improve motivation and learning in the classroom.” The most effective way to provide a learning environment that is conducive to learning is to provide appropriate curriculum that meets the needs of all the diverse learners in the classroom.
